Ransomware is a type of malicious software that prevents or limits you from accessing your systems, files or data unless a ransom is paid. It’s continually evolving, with new variations such as Ryuk and Sodinokibi causing havoc for businesses across the globe.
Ransomware attacks cause an average of 16.2 days of downtime, but some companies suffer much longer periods of inoperability. Take the foreign exchange company Travelex, who had their systems held to ransom for just under a month having been infiltrated over 6 months prior to the lock-out. On top of being unable to do business and managing unhappy customers and brokers, Travelex will now potentially face a fine from the ICO amounting to $950m.
The risks to business continuity, financial stability and market reputation, therefore, means that ransomware isn’t just a matter of concern for IT teams. It’s just as an important an issue for board members, finance departments, operations and HR and as such, everybody in a business needs to work together to help outsmart ransomware.
